Ruffler Foot Madness!!

I received a ruffler foot for Christmas this past year and just now got it out to play with.  I know, I know, I am slow and getting started, I do have to say that I was a little intimidated by this little piece of machinery.  Well, I am having the worst problems with it.  I don't know if it's my machine or the foot.  It's a universal ruffler foot that was purchased for me at Hancock Fabric's.  The construction of the foot seems to be really stiff to me, I'm not sure if it's supposed to be that way.  Surely I didn't pick up a bad one.  After searching many tutorials online I finally figured out how to attach it to my machine.  I have a Singer Confidence Quilter, not my favorite machine, but it's what I have.

The one thing that I figured out first off is you MUST make sure your needle is in the center position, otherwise, your going to break a needle.  Ok, I got everything straight here.  I usually sew with my tension set to AUTO so I thought this would be a good place to start.

I also put this part, I have no idea what you call it, to 1.  I think this is the piece that determines how much "ruffle" there is.

Put my fabric in place.  I learned to do this also by searching the tutorials, so I'm pretty sure that this is correct.

Then I start to sew and something is wrong, my machine jams up and is stuck.

After a few minutes of pulling and tugging and cutting I finally get it untangled.  Huge mess of thread!  UGH! I was really hoping that this would work.

Yay, I get to use my seam ripper now! Ok, so after pulling out all the thread I decide to play with the tension on my machine. I go both ways minus makes more of a tangled mess, and plus seems to be the best route to go.  So I set it to +2 and take off.

This is what I get. It seems to not really be catching all the way on the bobbin thread.

There are a few sections where the top thread did not even "link" to the bobbin thread.  I'm not really sure why it's doing this.  I really think my machine is kinda wimpy and maybe the foot is to stiff.

I asked my husband what he thinks, he's my go to Mr. fix-it guy.  He told me that I should try and oil it some and see if that works.  So I get out my sewing machine oil and dab a little drop on the friction points of the ruffler foot.  I tried it out after wiggling it around several times to lubricate it up and I get the same results.  I'm really not sure what to do.

I'm thinking that if I can get the ruffle to hold together and pin it to the fabric I'm going to sew it to then maybe it will be okay.

If anyone has any suggestions then please leave a comment. I will try anything.

  1. Its been a while since I have used my ruffle foot, but I remember it took me a while to remember what to do. So this is going from memory and will hopefully help in some way:

First, if the tension and the oil were working fine before you attached it to the machine then all of that should still be working fine. Attaching the ruffler shouldn't cause any of that to go wrong.

If I am remembering this right, the numbers on the ruffler (1, 6, 12) have a direct correlation to how tight the ruffles are attached. The number 1 would not ruffle fabric, the number 6 ruffles every 6th stitch, and the number 12 every 12th stitch. I may have the numbers backwards, the 12 may be a tighter stitch.

Maybe try putting the ruffle foot on 6 to see if that changes anything.

I will also try to attach mine tonight and if I have any other tips, I will log back on.
